Changing Face of Beauty Pageants in 2019

Over the past twelve months, we have seen a rise in Black women being crowned winners of Miss World, Miss Universe, Miss France and Miss USA to name a few. This achievement is breaking barriers and pushing forward more diverse contestants and winners from local, national and international cities. Zozibini Tunzi from South Africa states – "Tonight a door was opened and I could not be more grateful to have been the one to have walked through it". "May every little girl who witnessed this moment forever believe in the power of her dreams and may they see their faces reflected in mine". "I am Miss Universe 2019 (December 2019)". In today’s society young people are major players in Fashion, Afro Haircare and Beauty sectors through social media influencer sites and entrepreneurs. They have access to audiences globally and reach millions of followers every day. Many have seen their businesses become brand ambassadors for Beauty products, merchandising and marketing opportunities. These platforms are encouraged to work together with “positive campaigning” and monitoring social impact in their sectors. On the 9th November 2019, we had the opportunity to meet with the founders of Miss Caribbean UK – Clayton and Jacqui Brown. Their brand has been in the Pageant industry for 6 years, with a mission to positively promoting the Caribbean within the diaspora. This event sources contestants from the Midlands and London so that they have a broad spectrum of diverse women from all islands that are being represented and taking part in the grand finale next September 2020. This years winner Sydonie Barrett is an International law student, representing the Cayman Islands. It should be mentioned that this is the very first time that the competition has had an entry from the Cayman Islands therefore Sydonie is a trailblazer with high expectations in her role. We look forward to seeing the reconnections with the diaspora and Cayman Islands. We asked Clayton and Jacqui what’s in store for the competitors in 2020; "We have decided to give young professionals a platform to join us in our review of the event and media coverage. We are applying a fresh approach and exciting opportunities for new brands to work with us in Birmingham and London." "Our contestants will be able to engage with us and experience our creative elements throughout their journey in the competition. The grand finale takes place in London with access to photo shoots, rehearsals and special guest appearances. These activities prepare the ladies for the finale". – said Jacqui Brown
